X’s messaging app, XChat, is expected to be available for download on April 17. The app is designed for users to direct message (DM) anyone on X, functioning as a standalone messaging application.
XChat is currently listed on the App Store and allows users to chat and call across devices. This release marks a shift from earlier expectations of an upgraded direct messaging feature for X, which Elon Musk had discussed in mid-2025.
Musk indicated that the new direct messaging design would include encryption and a “whole new architecture.” Instead of an update to the existing DM feature, XChat offers a dedicated platform for communication among X users.

The app features end-to-end encryption, enabling message editing and the ability to delete messages for all conversation participants. Users can block screenshots and activate disappearing messages, which disappear within five minutes of being sent.
XChat also supports the creation of large group chats with up to 481 members. According to the App Store listing, XChat will not display ads or track user data.
Users can pre-order XChat for iPhones and iPads to ensure automatic download upon release. XChat’s official account promoted the app with a message stating, “Your encrypted chats deserve their own app.” This promotional message indicates a focus on privacy and user experience.
