Sony announced a new initiative called The Playerbase that allows fans to have their faces scanned and included in PS5 games. The first game to feature this initiative will be Gran Turismo 7, where one selected fan will appear as a time-limited character within the game.
The initiative will be available in “select markets” worldwide. Players interested can apply through an application webpage, which involves answering questions about their PlayStation experiences, logging into their PlayStation Network accounts, and undergoing a video interview.
Sony aims to prioritize long-time PlayStation users, suggesting that higher Trophy counts may improve a player’s chances in the application process. This initiative seeks to engage the player community amid relatively negative recent news for PlayStation.

Recent reports indicated a price increase for PS5 consoles due to economic pressures, and a delay in the planned 2027 launch of the PlayStation 6, which might not include a built-in disc drive. In this context, The Playerbase represents Sony’s effort to rebuild excitement among its player base.
“Maybe The Playerbase will get people excited about PlayStation again,” the company suggested while announcing the initiative.
