The latest WhatsApp build on TestFlight includes references to an upcoming feature that will integrate Status updates into the Chats tab.
This change aims to enhance the visibility of Status updates, giving them a more significant role in the messaging app, similar to Instagram’s Stories format. While WhatsApp Status has not been as prominent as Instagram Stories, Meta is reportedly working to elevate its importance within WhatsApp.
WABetaInfo recently noted findings from the WhatsApp beta for Android that indicated a shift in how users will access Status updates. The current TestFlight version also reflects these adjustments, though the feature remains inaccessible to users at this stage.

Once implemented, users will find a carousel of Status updates from their contacts at the top of the chat list. However, the tray displaying these updates will not be visible by default; users will need to pull down from the top of the chat list to reveal it, mirroring a feature seen in Telegram.
The design of the Status update interface closely resembles that of Instagram’s Stories carousel. It will feature a shortcut for users to publish their own Status updates, followed by updates from their contacts. The tray is optimized to present status updates based on user interactions, prioritizing the most relevant contacts first.
At the end of the tray, users can access hidden status updates from muted contacts. Similar to Instagram, WhatsApp’s Status updates will vanish after 24 hours and will support various creative tools, allowing users to add stickers, music, and other effects to their posts.
